“Life Before the Pandemic (After ?)”

Lionel Goodman presents our September/October 2021 gallery installation.

The images in this photography-show portray life’s fleeting scenes that we casually experienced before the pandemic. For example: Images 1-3 show a port scene in Southampton, England, revealing pleasurable anticipation of a passenger boarding (and about to depart) transatlantic liner, final call for baggage, and happy goodbyes of many of the ship’s passengers. Returning to a walk on Princeton’s on Nassau St. reveals two children offering their allowances to a “balloon man” blowing a twisted balloon. Image 4 is a visit to the town library showing an in-progress chess lesson. Image 5 shows three (unrelated) men sitting on a Nassau St. bench. Image 6, a  Paris tourist in front of Shakesphere & Company book store, snapping a photograph of  Notre Dame Cathedral. Will we be able to do this again in the same casual, thoughtless way??

Lionel Goodman, a Princeton resident, is an Emeritus Professor of Physical Chemistry at Rutgers University (NB).  He was a Guggenheim Fellow for his work using laser spectroscopy on why molecules have the architecture they have. His interest in photography began after his retirement fifteen years ago, and since then, he has had several one-man photography shows, most recently UNCOMMON FACES (2018 Squibb Gallery, Plainsboro Library). He received prizes for his people-oriented photographs, e.g., at the  Perkins Art Center, the 2019 Mercer County photography competition, and the Salmagundi Club in New York City.  His photograph “ABOUT TO DEPART” hangs in the Johnson and Johnson Museum permanent collection and “HOME IN PARIS” in the Mercer County Museum. He was awarded First in Show twice at Grounds for Sculpture Photography Expositions and has served as Program Chairman of the Princeton Photography club from 2008 – 2012.
