
Coming Out in the 1970’s
Ilene Palena, MSW, LSW, will speak about her personal experience of Coming Out as a Lesbian in the early to mid-1970s during her teen years. Her presentation will give a historical perspective of Homosexuality in America, including the legal impact on Lesbian and gay teachers, servicemen and women, parents, job and housing discrimination, and mental health and mental health treatment.
Ms. Palena was a Co-founder of the Gay Union of Trenton State (GUTS) at Trenton State College (TSC), which is now known as Prism at the College of New Jersey, and has been a public speaker since her time at TSC. She is currently co-chair of the Rainbow Ministry at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton.
Ms. Palena and her now-deceased partner of 25+ years and their two daughters have been members of the Plainsboro community for 23 years.
