Astronomy: The Stars and Planets Around Us

These teen run classes teach students about astronomy – the study of celestial objects and phenomena, in a more hands-on fashion.

For ages 5-9.

This class is a 4 session program on Saturday the 10th and 17th at 11am, and Sunday the 11th and 18th at 2pm.

About the teen: My name is Divya, and I am a Girls Scout Cadette. I will be a ninth-grader in the 2022-2023 school year. I will be running this program for my Girl Scouts Silver Award, which focuses on leadership and problem-solving. A problem I have noticed is that students in neighboring school districts (West Windsor – Plainsboro) are typically taught astronomy formally only in the later years of middle school, which can lessen interest or exposure to this scientific topic. Astronomy has always been one of the stepping stones to where our civilization has come; without it, there would be no time measurement, difficult traveling, little to no communication, and other considerable issues, which shows its importance to humanity. Astronomy is often misunderstood; astronomical events are often construed as malign, which often impacts people’s lives. Learning about astronomy will give students a better understanding of what goes on outside our planet and a greater sense of perspective.
