Plainsboro Public Library is pleased to present “Rhythm of Ink.”

Group Statement

We are three local artists brought together by our shared passion for Chinese painting and calligraphy. What began as regular meetings to appreciate and study Chinese art has evolved into this exhibition, which explores the expressive power of ink and brush.

Guided by the tradition that a Chinese painting’s soul resides in its brushwork, we go beyond mere depiction to reveal the inner landscape of the mind. While our individual styles and subjects vary, we are united by the subtle dance of the brush. Rhythm of Ink invites you to experience how the “five shades of ink,” the interplay of wet and dry, and the vitality of the lines create depth and atmosphere—capturing a wide range of movement, texture, and mood.

Jin Tang 唐正进

I started oil painting in 1994, enjoying figure painting to explore the depth of human character. Since 2020, I have turned my focus toward Chinese painting, with a special interest in Shanshui (landscapes). To me, Chinese landscapes are more than just scenery, they are a vessel for the thoughts, emotions, and spiritual aspirations of both the artist and the viewer. Recently, I’ve been getting more into Chinese culture and philosophy. I have also returned to calligraphy, a practice from my youth that I now find even more profound for its deep feeling.

Ying Wang 王颖勤

I am trained as an architect, educated both in China and the US, and a homemaker after my second child was born. When I was young, I enjoyed drawing and painting in gouache and oil. Starting in 2015, I practiced Chinese calligraphy regularly, which was one of my favorite subjects in grade school back in China. Jin and I, together we found some great teachers. Among them are Dr. Michael Shiue, who taught Chinese calligraphy for many years at Plainsboro Township Recreation Center, and Dr. Shiling Zhou, a talented professional calligrapher and artist based in NJ, and many others at the Seven Seas Institute of Chinese Calligraphy online. I have also had the pleasure of teaching Chinese calligraphy at Huaxia Plainsboro Chinese School and through private lessons. I love the spontaneous character of Chinese calligraphy — it’s such a direct and unique way to express emotions and stories. In my free time l enjoy walking, practicing Taiji, and gardening.

Jennifer Yuan 袁峥

I am a Chinese brush painting and calligraphy artist and an instructor at the Arts Council of Princeton. Born and raised in Shanghai, China, I moved to the States to study neuroscience and later worked as a software engineer. From 2013 to 2017, I studied Chinese brush painting under Dr. Huangxin Wang (王璜鑫) at the Guanghua Chinese School in Blue Bell, PA; I am now based in Princeton, NJ. Over the years, various artistic styles have inspired me. Nature is my favorite theme; I paint a wide range of subjects, including peonies, roses, bamboo, plum blossoms, lotus flowers, fish, and landscapes (Shanshui). I believe nature holds profound feelings, emotions, and ideals. Traditionally, these subjects symbolize character traits, good fortune, or a dreamland —meanings I find remain deeply relevant today.

The exhibit will open on June 16 and will remain open through July 31.

The artists will host a reception in the gallery on June 20th at 2pm.
Light refreshments will be served.
